Work has started on a new £1m pavilion and clubhouse at Braywick sports ground in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The site's previous clubhouse, which is used by Maidenhead Athletics Club, was demolished earlier this year due to concerns over its future durability.

As well as a new clubhouse for the athletics club, the new site will also include a storage facility for Maidenhead Archery Club, eight new changing rooms for teams using the park's grass and artificial pitches, and changing facilities for officials.

Funding for the development has come from Section 106 developer contributions, in addition to money provided by the athletics club itself.

Lead member for leisure and culture at The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, Jesse Grey, said: "This is the start of a very exciting project for Maidenhead Athletics Club and for all those who use Braywick sports ground.

"Many borough residents use the sports ground all year round, as do visiting teams and clubs. The new building will provide some welcome new facilities of which we can be justifiably proud."

Chair of Maidenhead Athletics Club, Dave Dando, said: "The existing clubhouse was built in 1964 with a life expectancy of 25 years. Despite it's ongoing resilience, the chances of it surviving another winter are not great.

"Club membership is at an all-time high, with an ever-growing waiting list for places. The need for enhanced facilities of all types is thus essential to address this demand for athletics participation in the town."

The new clubhouse is expected to be completed in December.
