A new £1.8m pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the River Severn in Worcester - part of the national Connect2 project to improve local travel - has officially opened to the public.

Diglis Bridge is located to the south of Diglis Island and links a footpath in Weir Lane with Navigation Road and the Severn Way, and was built with the help of £850,000 of Big Lottery Fund support. The scheme, which took three years to complete, was led by Worcester City Council, Worcestershire City Council and the sustainable transport charity, Sustrans.

Yee Associates produced the initial design concept for the bridge, with Mott MacDonald providing detailed designs. Steel fabrication and construction was carried out by the Rowecord Group and Alun Griffith Contractors was the lead contractor. Derek Prodger, cabinet member for transport and safe environment at the county council, said: "The opening of this new bridge will bring to an end a long journey that started many years ago with a vision for the county."
