Work on Manchester’s Philips Park complete
Work has been completed on a £430,000 redevelopment of Philips Park in east Manchester.
Improvements to the 31-acre open space include repairs and partial rebuilding of the Grade II-listed boundary wall, new heritage-style railings, up-grading of entrances and a new adventure-style play area at the northern end pf the park.
The park’s Peace Garden has also had a makeover including a new memorial dedicated to the former mill and factory workers in the area. The footpaths have also been improved to encourage people to walk along the river.
An interactive website will also allow visitors to investigate the park’s history and provide up-to-date information on park management and public events.
The work was funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), European Regional Development Fund, East Manchester New Deal for Communities and Manchester City Council.
Michael Kane, Manchester City Council’s executive member for arts and leisure, said: “This investment represents Manchester’s determination to improve green spaces and parks across the city, meaning everyone can enjoy a better range and quality of services.”
