Work starts on Hatcham Gardens overhaul
Renovation work has started on a London Development Agency (LDA)-led scheme, which aims to transform Hatcham Gardens in New Cross, London.
Open space within the Kender Triangle area will receive a major facelift as part of the mayor of London's Great Spaces initiative, including the removal of tarmac and fencing and the planting of 50 trees. A new canopy created by Albazia trees, a public drinking fountain and play equipment will be installed as part of renovation work, as well as a range of features such as a giant sandpit, chess tables and a ping-pong table.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: "When completed Hatcham Gardens will be transformed into a modern oasis for New Cross residents where they can relax on new benches under shaded canopies with the added benefit of a new drinking fountain." LDA group director for design, development and environment, Peter Bishop, added: "Well-designed public spaces can define an entire area. These changes to Hatcham Gardens will set a new benchmark for modern parks - a Great Space of which we can all be proud."
Construction company Skanska is carrying out the work, while also being involved with efforts to reorganise the Kender Triangle roads as part of a Transport for London scheme to replace the existing gyratory with two-way traffic.
