Work starts on Salford regeneration scheme
Construction work has started on a major mixed-use regeneration scheme that is designed to transform the Chapel Street area of Salford.
Salford City Council (SCC) and the English Cities Fund are leading the scheme, which is being funded with nearly £9m from the Northwest Regional Development Agency. European Union investment totalling nearly £1.8m will also go towards the project, which will comprise 390 hotel rooms and 220,000sq m (2.4 million sq ft) of commercial space.
A residential development featuring 849 homes is also mooted as part of the regeneration of the Chapel Street area, which links Salford University with Manchester city centre. SCC lead member for planning Derek Antrobus said: "There is already a vibrant community based in the area and we expect this to thrive with the new development."
