World War I is the focus for a raft of new Heritage Lottery Funded initiatives
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced a raft of newly-funded projects which will help to explore, conserve and share knowledge about World War I.
The HLF will provide £6m funding for a First World War: Then and Now small grants programme, as well as funding for larger museums to present world war heritage.
The Imperial War Museum will be using £4.5m to create new First World War galleries, while the Tank Museum, Dorset, is to spend £5.4m on a project to house 130 vehicles that are at risk because of their current location in cramped, damp and unheated sheds.
Grants awarded for the smaller programme will be spent by a number of communities looking to delve into world war history.
One such project will see the National Children’s Football Alliance in Kent spending £32,500 on investigating the relationship between the war and sport, by looking at the 1914 Christmas Day truce.
