YMCAfit launches free dance instructor training
Fitness provider Central YMCA has announced plans for a free training programme to transform London youngsters into qualified street dance instructors.
The YMCAFit Strictly Street Dance course targets young people aged 16 to 18 years old in Camden, London. The 26-day programme will lead to a Level 2 Kids Fitness – Street Dance qualification, allowing them to plan and teach their own dance sessions and monitor changes to children's physical and mental health. Denise Page, YMCAfit curriculum director, said: "Our course could put Camden firmly on the street dancing map. By giving young people in the borough the chance to gain a professional qualification, we can help young people build a rewarding career in the fitness industry, as well as improving the health and well-being of children.
"Getting children involved in fun fitness activities from an early age is one of the best investments we can make to help tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity." Young people will learn how to choreograph dance routines and develop communication and team working skills. Once qualified instructors can teach five to 16-year-olds in schools, leisure centre, health clubs and community centres.
The course starts February 2009 at One KX (central YMCA centre) in King's Cross, London.
