York gallery revamp planned
York Museums Trust has lodged a planning application for the refurbishment of York Art Gallery.
The trust hopes to expand the first floor gallery and make repairs to the roof and floors. The revamp will reveal the original Victorian architecture and provide space for the forthcoming Gallery of Pots exhibition.
A spokesperson from the designers — Harrogate-based Gelder Harvey Architects — said: “The space in its current format is unappealing, with the existing suspended ceiling imposing an oppressive feel with no natural light.
“The intention is to provide a bright, welcoming and comfortable space which will reflect the quality of the displays it is to accommodate.”
A spokesman for the trust added: “The aim of the gallery will be to provide a space to display more of our studio pottery collection, with a programme of changing exhibitions. If planning permission is granted, the art gallery will remain open, with only the Modern Approaches gallery being closed to the public.”
Renaissance Yorkshire and Arts Council England have provided funding, although further investment is being sought.
A decision by the City of York Council is expected by April.
