Young footballers get development centre in Burton
Burton College and Burton Albion Football Club are to jointly launch a new Youth Football Development Centre.
The scheme is designed to offer 16- to 18-year-olds high quality coaching and training facilities alongside an educational programme and range of vocational qualifications.
The coaching team will be led by ex-Burton Albion player, Darren Wassall, while educational training will be provided by Burton college at its town centre campus and Shobnall Sports Hall.
As part of a two year, full-time course, the students will compete as Burton Albion’s Youth Team in the Nationwide Conference Youth League.
College principal and chief executive, Keith Norris, said: “The formation of the new Youth Development Centre is a significant step forward.
“Working in partnership, we are seeking to develop the environment for young footballers to combine the benefits of a formal education with professional football coaching.
“The students will have the opportunity to become full-time or semi-professional footballers, if they have the ability and skills, or the chance to combine football with an alternative career based on the qualifications gained at the college.” Details: + 44 (0)1283 494400
