Youngsters and older adults in line to Get up and Go

Scores of older adults and school children from The Royal High Primary (P5) kicked up their heels and tore down generational barriers together at the first ever Intergenerational Tea Dance to be hosted by Edinburgh Leisure and The City of Edinburgh Council.

Be Full of Life - Get Up and Go, which was delivered in partnership with Pilmeny Development Project, took place at Meadowbank Sports Centre on 1 October to mark International Day of Older People.

Starting at 10am, a range of taster classes were offered throughout the morning, from Salsa to Tai Chi - all part of Get up and Go, a city wide programme of activities which Edinburgh Leisure helps to deliver to adults over 50.

In the afternoon, the event - which was open to the public all day - culminated in an energetic intergenerational line dancing session for the young and more mature participants to join in and learn from each other.

Edinburgh Leisure Chief Executive Keith Jackson said: "We were delighted to host this fun event which brought different generations together to get active. We welcomed more older adults through our venues last year than ever before and this is a great way to celebrate International Older Adults Day in our own unique way."

Be Full of Life - Get Up and Go was also attended by Councilor Deidre Brock who launched the new 2009/ 2010 Get up and Go brochure, which is produced annually by The City of Edinburgh Council. Everybody attending the event received their own personal copy.

Councilor Brock said: "It's so important to keep our bodies and our minds as active and healthy as possible, and Get up and Go is all about improving services and providing opportunities for older people in Edinburgh to do just that.

"The new Get up and Go brochure is packed with information to get you active and keep you healthy and I know there will be something in this new programme for everyone. No matter what age you are Be Full of Life and Get up and Go."

There was also a Health Fair throughout the day with 45 exhibitors offering advice and information on health, safety and useful tips to help participants stay active and healthy.

Catering and refreshments at the Tea Dance were provided by Sainsburys.
