Soweto Theatre, a ZAR150m (US$18m, EUR14m, £11m) arts complex located in the centre of Jabulani, is being unveiled today (25 May) by the City of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ranburg-based architects Afritects are behind the design of the new theatre, which comprises a 420-seat main auditorium with an end stage, orchestra pit, fly tower and buttress.
Two smaller black box venues can seat 180 and 90 visitors respectively, with an indoor foyer connecting all three areas. An outdoor plaza will serve as an additional performing space.
Soweto Theatre is regarded as the "cultural heart" of Jabulani will offer "relevant" theatre programmes for local audiences, while promoting traditional African art forms.
City of Johannesburg director of arts, culture and heritage services Steven Sack said: "We want to turn Soweto into a viable neighbourhood that has facilities you find in the inner city, including entertainment and recreational facilities of the very best Johannesburg could offer."
