The Salmon Youth Centre (SYC) in Bermondsey, London, is due to submit its funding bid to the government for the second and final phase of its £10.6m redevelopment project.
When complete, the Christian centre will provide extensive leisure and sports facilities for six to 26-year-olds, as well as a range of clubs and activity programmes to inspire young people to reach their potential.
The project work is being developed by a design team including CPL Architects, Calfordseaden Project Management and construction firm ROK Building.
Phase two of the Christian SYC is estimated to cost £2m, and will concentrate on the first three floors of the seven-storey development to enhance phase one's sporting and leisure facilities.
The second phase will include additional social and volunteer areas, an IT suite, a 20-station fitness suite and a chapel room. There will also be a training kitchen, an arts and crafts room and 26 key worker flats and office space.
Phase one, which cost a total of £8.2m and was completed earlier this year, includes an 12.5m outside, climbing wall attached to a residential tower, a four-court sports hall, changing rooms for 70 people, a bike store, a dance and music studio and a performance theatre.
The £8.2m was jointly funded by Southwark Council, The London Development Agency, Active England, SportEngland and the National Lottery, as well as a number of smaller organisations.
The second phase bid will be submitted to the Big Lottery Fund, which is delivering funding on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) for youth centre development programmes.
The funding scheme, called myplace, was launched in May 2008 and is offering grants up to £5m to improve youth centre facilities. The DCSF intends to distribute £190m between 2008 and 2010 as part of its ten-year Aiming high for young people strategy.
