£14.5m Glaswegian football training facility gets go ahead
A £14.5m football training facility in the Toryglen area of Glasgow has been granted planning permission.
The Scottish Executive, though sportscotland, will put £3m towards the project, while Glasgow City Council is providing the remaining £11.5m.
Cllr John Lynch, executive member for cultural & leisure services, said: “Toryglen is a unique football development and the perfect neighbour for the National Stadium at Hampden. It will be a wonderful addition to the existing top-class sporting facilities in Glasgow.”
The development – scheduled to open in September – will include a full-size indoor synthetic pitch and a rugby training area, while outside will be three full-size floodlit synthetic pitches, a five-a-side court and a goalkeeper training area.
It will also boast a lounge, cafeteria, changing suites and first aid and treatment rooms.
Hundreds of school children will have access to the facility as part of the Executive’s Active Schools Programme and it will also play a key role in the Scottish Football Association’s action plan for youth football.
According to a statement from the Scottish Executive, the Toryglen scheme will be the first of 10 projects to receive stage two approval under its £50m National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy, which includes £21.2m from sportscotland Lottery Sports Fund.
The remaining nine projects subject to approval are located in Falkirk, Stirling, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and North Lanarkshire.
