£14.7m Newham leisure centre plans approved
Newham Council has approved plans for the construction of a new £14.7m leisure centre on the site of the existing Atherton Leisure Centre in Stratford, east London.
The local authority anticipates work will commence on site in July 2013, with the new complex to open in early 2015. It will incorporate swimming facilities, a gym and space for fitness classes.
According to Newham Council, a key factor in its decision to pursue plans for the new-build development was the presence of asbestos-containing materials throughout the existing facility.
Atherton Leisure Centre had been due to close at the end of 2011, but the council has confirmed that its gym and free weights area will now remain available until the end of this year.
A report was put before councillors that included feedback from a public consultation, while also revealing that maintaining or repairing the current facility would offer "poor value".
