£1m scheme for Peak District communities

A new £1.253m pilot initiative has been launched by the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) in a bid to support rural businesses and communities over a three-year period.

Working in partnership with the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DDEP), it is hoped that the Live and Work Rural scheme will help develop the PDNPA's existing community planning work. The programme, which will run until 31 March 2012, aims to provide advice to those looking to establish a business that uses the park area as an asset, to help existing firms obtain funding from local and regional organisations, and to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

Officers will also help Peak District communities to help tackle local issues, such as the provision of youth facilities, while also encouraging the development of skills to strengthen community schemes. EMDA and DDEP have contributed a total of £595,000 towards the Live and Work Rural programme, while £458,000 has come from the park authority. A further £200,000 has come from various other partners, including the University of Derby, Natural England and Peak Partners for Rural Action.

PDNPA chair Narendra Bajaria said: "While many rural businesses are by their very nature small in size, when put together they make a huge contribution to the East Midlands economy and provide more than 14,000 jobs. EMDA chair Bryan Jackson added: "The East Midlands is one of the most rural areas in England, so it is vital – particularly during these challenging economic times – that we support people and businesses operating in the countryside."
