Devon County Council has commissioned a feasibility study for a dual-use £20m Centre of Sporting Achievement in Teignbridge. The aim of the development is to provide Devon with an Olympic legacy post 2012.
If the development goes ahead, the indoor facilities will feature a swimming pool, 12-court sports hall with an adjacent gymnastics centre, an indoor bowling facility, a fitness suite and a climbing zone. There will also be coaching and meeting rooms.
Outdoor facilities include an athletics track, a cricket pitch, a velodrome and BMX track as well as an artificial turf football and hockey pitch.
Deputy council leader John Smith, said: "While it is about sporting excellence, it is also about achievement for all and the facilities we envisage would be open to the whole community." The centre will also be used by nearby Teign School, which is currently without sports facilities.
The council has earmarked £10m for the project generated from the £48m sale of Exeter Airport and its Investing in Devon fund.
The authority has also been consulting with Sport England, Active Devon, Teignbridge District Council, Devon Primary Care Trust and the Abbrock Sports and Social Club on the plans.
The feasibility study is expected to be completed by October and the project completed by 2010.
