£20m studio and tourism complex in Highlands
Former Eurythmics musician Dave Stewart and actor James Cosmo are behind plans submitted last week for a £20m film studio and tourism complex in Inverness, Scotland.
The scheme proposes tourist attractions including a mock fort, like those seen in the Hollywood film Braveheart. The fort will be part of a reconstructed village and surrounded by a moat. The 61-acre site will also include a 230-room hotel, retail outlet and a film studio, which it is hoped will attract more large-scale productions to the Highlands.
Roy Davis, project manager of development company Highland Studios Group said the fort and village will be based on archaeological information from the time of Scots' icon William Wallace, on which Braveheart was based. 'We want the whole thing to be authentic and look as similar to forts in that period as it can,' he said.
The plans are being encouraged by the Highlands Council, which hopes the complex will help Inverness in its bid to become a European city of culture.
A decision regarding planning permission is expected in April.
