£22m revamp for Edinburgh’s Caledonian
The Caledonian Hilton in Edinburgh is undergoing a £22m revamp orchestrated by its new owners, The Caledonian Operating Company.
The two to three-year refurbishment will create a courtyard lounge adjacent to a new fine-dining restaurant, which will replace The Pompadour eating establishment room, in addition to upgraded bedrooms by RPW Design.
If approved by Edinburgh City Council, future plans for the Caledonian include converting the hotel’s current car park into 50 superior bedrooms and transforming the existing leisure club into an international standard spa.
General manager Willy Blattner said: “The Caledonian Hilton is an iconic landmark on Princes Street and this substantial investment will allow us to not only overhaul the interior of the hotel but also to maintain the character of this historic building.
“The creation of a grand courtyard lounge in 2009 on the site of the old original station concourse will form the new heart of the hotel and its glass roof will echo the original Victorian station, allowing guests to see the internal façade of the hotel.”
The exterior façade of the building will also be fully restored to its former glory.
John Rogers, Hilton operational vice president for the North, added: “This investment is reflective of work being undertaken on Hilton hotels throughout the country – part of a further £13m investment programme for 2008.
“We have robust development plans for Scotland over the next five to 10 years and have just announced plans for a brand new Hilton Garden Inn hotel at Aberdeen Airport.”
The Caledonian Operating Company bought the listed property in August 2007.
