£2.5m fitness upgrade for Nelson’s Wavelengths
Lancashire-based Pendle Leisure Trust has revealed plans for a £2.5m extension to the Pendle Wavelengths pool in Nelson.
The new-build development will include a family fitness and relaxation spa centre, expected to be open by January 2007.
The gym, which will open with 54 stations and build up to more than 70, will be based on the top floor and include a dance studio.
There will also be a junior gym designed for children, but which can be used as an introductory gym for new or inactive users as well.
The spa suite will feature a sauna, steamroom, rasul mud bath, massage and aromatherapy areas and ice and monsoon showers.
The existing health suite will be converted into a crèche and there will be a new reception area, foyer and offices.
The trust has already secured funding for the development, with a grant of £1m from the Single Regeneration budget being agreed by Pendle Partnership and the North West Development Agency.
The trust has appointed project manager Alliance Leisure to deliver the scheme, having previously worked together on gym refurbishments at Pendle Leisure Centre and West Craven Sports Centre.
The centre has been designed by the Manchester-based Pozzoni Design Group.
Phil Storey, chief executive of Pendle Leisure Trust, said: “I hope this will be a scheme that will act as a blueprint for many other leisure trusts to follow.”
Work is expected to begin on site in July. Details: www.pendlelife.co.uk
