£2m funding for Southwark sports projects
Southwark Council has announced a number of sports projects across the London borough are to receive a share of more than £2m to contribute towards the legacy of the 2012 Games.
Although the funding is subject to "final approval", the Capital Legacy Group has chosen a total of 10 schemes to receive support out of an initial 40 applications.
Herne Hill Velodrome Trust is among the recipients and has been handed £400,000 towards the development of London's last remaining 1948 Olympic venue into a multi-use centre.
The Camberwell Baths Campaign has been allocated £490,000 to support a further phase of revamp work at the historic facility, which will result in an overhaul of the sports hall.
Southwark Park Sports Complex in Rotherhithe will undergo modernisation work thanks to a £370,000 award, while Peckham Rye pitches and changing rooms secured £200,000.
Veronica Ward, the council's cabinet member for culture, leisure, sport and the Olympics, said: "We had some great submissions and it was very difficult to decide the final ten but we have chosen projects which we believe will benefit people across the borough, regardless of age or level of fitness.
"We are committed to getting more people involved in sport in Southwark and hope these projects will help create a lasting legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games."
