£300m leisure plans for Wirral shipyard site
The new owners of Cammell Laird’s shipyard site have announced leisure development projects that could potentially attract £300m investment to the Wirral area.
The owners of the 67-acre Birkenhead site, part of a consortium headed by Wirral’s Chamber of Commerce chairmen Gerry White and also including Warren Distribution owner, Dave Day, property developer Mike Ryder and Stanton Marine owner Bill McDonald, purchased the vacant site for an undisclosed sum.
The proposed plans include a 4,000 capacity arena – which has already received backing from Sony entertainment – plus an indoor ski slope, a skating rink, residential waterfront apartments, a maritime museum and hotels.
Other development possibilities include a transport interchange and new ground for Tranmere Rovers football club.
The group’s plans are being backed by The Royal Bank of Scotland. However, the site does not yet have clearance for leisure or housing developments in the town’s unitary plan.
Future development plans for the land, which was previously owned by BAE Systems, will be considered again by the consortium in September, following a summer recess.
