Some of the most deprived communities in England are set to benefit from new youth facilities after the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) announced £31m for eight projects.

Hull City Council (HCC) has been handed the largest share of funding as part of the second round of myplace funding, with £5m set to go towards the development of a five-storey youth facility to provide activities and support for vulnerable young people. The new Hull venue will boast facilities for performing arts facilities, skateboarding and parkour, as well as film making and music recording. The centre will also offer advice on accommodation, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy.

Meanwhile, more than £4.75m will help fund a project to develop a youth centre in Luton, Bedfordshire, which is being led by Voluntary Action Luton and is supported by Luton Borough Council, NHS Luton and the Young Offending Team. Schemes in Lewisham (£3.5m), Tower Hamlets (£3.9m) and Enfield (£3m) in London, together with Weymouth, Dorset (£3m), Calderdale, Halifax (£3.8m) and Scarborough (£4m) will also benefit from funding.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Gone are the days when shabby youth clubs with dusty halls were the only option for young people. Through myplace, local communities will benefit from state of the art youth centres that will have a lasting impact on future generations for years to come." The myplace initiative, administered on behalf of the DCSF by the Big Fund - part of the Big Lottery Fund, will see more than £270m invested by the government in the provision of new youth centres.
