£36m sports centre planned for Huddersfield
Plans for a £36.2m sports complex in Huddersfield have been unveiled by Kirklees Council.
The complex will feature a leisure pool – including a beach, a wave machine, a flume, and a sidewinder ride – as well as a 25m swimming pool; a teaching pool; two large sports halls; climbing, squash and martial arts facilities; a fitness suite and a café and children’s area.
A substantial amount of funding would come from the council selling the land on which the current centre in Southgate is located to the Tesco supermarket chain.
Mehboob Kahn, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Several sites were considered for a new sports centre and the Spring Grove site has been chosen as the only viable option.
“This is a prominent location with excellent transport and pedestrian links into the town centre, so there could be a knock-on effect of far more people using our shops before or after they visit the sports centre.
“Huddersfield needs these new facilities as the current sports centre is coming to the end of its useful life and is a growing liability for local taxpayers.”
If the project receives planning permission, the council could start work on the centre late next year.
