£4m leisure centre opens in Aith
Shetland Recreational Trust has opened it latest venture, a £4m leisure centre in Aith.
The scheme has been mainly funded by the Shetland Island Council Charitable Trust (SICCT) through disturbance payments received for the island's oil terminal - one of the largest in Europe. Further funding was received from Sport Scotland.
This is the eighth leisure centre to be funded by SICCT over the last 18 years as part of a programme to build rural leisure facilities next to junior high schools. James Johnston of the Shetland Recreational Trust explains: 'Being an island, you're never further than three miles from the sea. So our children have to be taught how to swim. Locating facilities next to high schools means that the school can use them during the day and the community can have access in the evening.'
Designed to cater for the whole family, the West Mainland Leisure Centre includes a pool with water features, a learner pool and spa pool. Other facilities include a health and fitness suite, a multi-use games hall as well as a community room. The centre is also open to non-members. Details: +44 (0)1595 810444
