£4m public realm programme in Westminster revealed
A new £4m programme to regenerate the public space around London's Grade I-listed Westminster Cathedral is being developed by Westminster City Council.
The Westminster Cathedral Piazza Draft Action Plan, which outlines area improvements over the next 10 years, was created in partnership with the local community and local businesses to help create better open public spaces and encourage more visitors. The 2,200sq m (21,527sq ft) Piazza, created in 1975, is one of two soon-to-be reinvented public spaces that will be the subject of a landscape and lighting design competition.
The second space is the smaller Wilcox Place, which also become the site for a rolling public art programme and choir performances outside the cathedral, which was created by John Francis Bentley in 1903. According to the plan, Wilcox Place is "rarely used by the public mainly because the area is tired, unattractive and cluttered with street furniture." The council has earmarked £2.8m to help implement the proposals and expects the rest to be generated from match funding from local businesses and private investors.
