£64m art gallery to open in March
A £64m arts initiative, Compton Verney, is due to open in Warwickshire on 26 March.
Consisting of around 20 exhibition spaces, Compton Verney will display a diverse collection of work from northern and southern Europe and Asia as well as British portraits and folk art from the collection of philanthropist Sir Peter Moore.
The 18th century house, set in 120 acres, was purchased in 1993 by the Peter Moores Foundation, which has spent the last 10 years transforming it into a venue to house the collection.
The Foundation has funded around 99 per cent of the acquisition and renovation costs – currently in the region of £64m – with the remainder coming from grants from sources including Stratford District Council, Arts Council England and English Heritage.
Film maker, Peter Greenaway, is to create an installation in both the galleries and the grounds for the launch day, revisiting his 1982 film The Draughtsman’s Contract to explore the English country house and its relationship to the world beyond through a character called Tulse Luper. The character will also be the subject of Greenaway’s forthcoming film trilogy. Details: +44 (0)1926 645500
