Roko Health Clubs has launched a £7m flagship health club in York, its sixth in the region.

The 33,000sq ft (3,066sq m) site is located on the Clifton Moore retail and industrial park in north east York, and has a capacity for more than 4,000 members.

The 8,800sq ft (818sq m) gym, equipped by Life Fitness, has 80 stations for people of all abilities.

An induction area for those new to exercise features three private booths for consultations, and a discrete area where new members can become familiar with equipment.

There are also two personal training spaces equipped with dual action pulleys, a boxing ring, punch bags, and a range of fitness accessories from Escape Fitness.

Other facilities on site include two exercise studios equipped with the RBK Professional Studio range by Escape Fitness, a group cycling studio, a 20m swimming pool, a splash pool, a poolside spa, sauna and steam room, along with a crèche, soft play area, and full junior timetable.

The health club is also the first in the region to offer Life Fitness’s Elevation Series 95 treadmills, which allow users to plug in and charge their iPods, as well as control play lists and watch iPod video content. The treadmills also offer a virtual onscreen trainer to advise on the workout.

Four tennis courts and a hair and beauty service will be added to the site in July, and two full-size cricket pitches and a cricket square will launch in the summer of 2009.

Club memberships start at £49.95 with a £35 joining fee.

“Roko wanted to create an environment where members could plan their exercise journey,” said Andy Dunn, key account manager for Life Fitness, “We have designed the club to allow members to progress from the induction area right through to the more advanced cables and free weights spaces, providing a total solution for all members’ fitness needs.”
