Plans have been submitted to Sheffield City Council for an £80m indoor ski development called Snow Mountain.

The mixed-use, 13 million sq ft (1.2 million sq m) complex would boast Europe’s largest indoor snow hall – at 195,000sq ft (18,116sq m) – complete with a 980ft (298m) indoor slope – as well as blend leisure and retail areas and a 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) hotel.

The indoor ski slope will be constantly snow-covered and feature a 230ft (70m) drop with colour-coded winding runs of differing gradients.

Designed by Killingworth-based architects Faulkner Browns, the development would be situated on a hillside site near the existing Ski Village site at Parkwood Springs.

The concept for the destination has been devised by Ski Village owner, John Fleetham and developers Craig Marks and Brian Craig.

The team has also submitted plans for a gondola cableway, which would link Snow Mountain with Sheffield’s supertram network.

If the development is given the go-ahead, it is intended to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Upper Don Valley. Funding will be raised from a mixture of private finance and grants.

“This scheme will establish the site as a major attraction of national significance,” said Marks. “It will not only put Sheffield on the map but will play a major part in contributing to civic plans for the revitalisation of the Upper Don Valley area.”

Fleetham added: “Snow Mountain will be Europe’s most innovative alpine style indoor facility, recreating winter sports and snow play experiences for skiers, snowboarders or those who just want to have fun in the snow.”
