Award for London Wetland Centre
The London Wetland Centre has become this year's Global Winner of the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2001.
The awards recognise leading sustainable tourism practices throughout the world. Stephanie Fudge, operations manager was delighted by the award: It is fantastic that we have been recognised for our contribution to environmental education and sustainable tourism.
The centre was created by The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust over a five-year period, converting four concrete-lined reservoirs into more than 30 different wetland habitats. An observatory, cinema and discovery centre have also been built.
Professor David Bellamy, chair of the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow's Global judging panel said the centre is the culmination of Sir Peter Scott's dream to put plants and wildfowl at the heart of every major city: The Wetland Centre is the only project of its kind working to this scale, and as such is a superb role-model for all our great cities.
Cumbria's indoor visitor attraction, Rheged also won an award for the built environment. The other Tourism for Tomorrow awards went to the Temple Tiger Jungle Lodge in Nepal, the Orchid Hotel in Inda, The European Centre for Ecological Agriculture and Tourism in Poland and the Orlango Birds and Seascapre Tour in Philippines.
