Chefs getting wages boost
The shortage of kitchen staff has seen wages in the London hotel and catering sector rise well above the rate of inflation, according to a survey by Adecco. Salaries in the capital rose by an average of 3.63 per cent over the last 12 months, compared to 1.4 per cent in offices. Chefs have seen the biggest rise in salaries, with head chefs earning an average of £25,278 last year. The survey also showed that management positions are well paid, with general managers earning as much as £39,000. Adecco's Michael Anscombe, said: We have a severe skills shortage on our hands in the capital. Chefs and other kitchen staff are scarce, pushing up salaries. The problem stems from the industry's image. Most junior staff are working part time or while studying, giving no though to catering as a long term career.
