DCMS' 'openbritain' site to combat crisis
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has launched a website to reiterate its message that the countryside is open in light of the foot and mouth crisis. The website, www.openbritain.gov.uk signposts visitors from the UK and abroad to up-to-date information on the many attractions and events not affected by the crisis that are still welcoming visitors. Culture Secretary, Chris Smith, said that Britain is open for business and ready to welcome guests on the launch of the site which also includes guidelines for walkers and visitors to the country, a search facility on 15,000 events and attractions, and updates on the Government's latest measures to control the disease. The website hopes to regenerate tourism over Easter, which, according to the British Travel Authority, has suffered losses of up to 30 per cent. See inside for further details.
