Major new BMX facility for Southwark park
Southwark Council has approved plans for the development of a "national standard" BMX track in south London's Burgess Park, which is currently undergoing an £8m revamp.
The proposals include a 400m (1,312ft) track with a starting hill, banked hairpin turns and a variety of jumps. It has been designed for use by people of all ages and abilities.
Due for completion in January 2013, the venue will be capable of hosting international races and will be one of the first in London to accommodate summer and winter national events.
British Cycling, the Playsport Facility Fund and the London Marathon Charitable Trust are helping to fund the project, in addition to the local authority.
Southwark Council cabinet member for leisure Veronica Ward said: "These are really exciting plans which will make a massive contribution to the local community and will hopefully nurture future Olympic athletes."
Burgess Park is scheduled to reopen later this summer following its redevelopment.
