Merlin to open Helsinki aquarium
Aquarium operator, Merlin Entertainments, has teamed up with a Finnish organisation to open a Sea Life Centre at a theme park near Helsinki. Merlin and Finnish children's day foundation, Lasten Päivän Säätiö will go 50:50 on the development of a FM 50m (£5m) Sea Life Centre at LPS's Linnanmaki Amusement Park. Scheduled to open next June it will house a range of sea creatures including shrimps, starfish, sharks and stingrays. Like the existing centres, it will have a giant ocean display with underwater tunnel and it will have an educational focus, particularly about environmental issues. This will be Merlin's second site at a European theme park, following the recent launch of the Sea Life Val D'Europe at Disneyland Paris. Merlin's managing director, Nick Varney, is delighted to secure the deal: The Linnanmaki development will see the expansion of the Sea Life brand into an eighth European country and bring the number of centres we operate to 14. Coupled with recent new Dungeon developments in Hamburg and Edinburgh, it represents another significant step towards our goal of becoming one of Europe's most successful entertainment companies. Managing director of Linnanmaki, Kalle Justander, says this will help to extend the theme attraction's season.
