Scotland to boost sports participation
The Scottish Executive held a Performance Sports Summit today to consult how the country can boost its representation in international sport.
The meeting debated the opportunities, benefits and challenges of increasing the number of Scots participating at the elite level on the international stage, especially within Scottish teams.
Sports minister Stewart Maxwell said: “I want to kick-start a discussion among the sporting community to look at all the areas in which our sportsmen and women can compete as part of Scottish teams on a world stage.
“It means looking at how we can nurture more of our sporting talent to higher standards, as well as overcoming hurdles preventing Scottish athletes from fulfilling their ambitions.”
The summit builds on the national sports strategy Reaching Higher – Building on the Success of Sport 21, published in March.
