Following Tony Blair's appointment of Richard Caborn as the new Minister for Sport, Sport England chief executive, Derek Casey has resigned. Casey, who has been in the post for the last six years, was planning to leave next year but decided to leave now to allow a new person to 'take on the long-term task of brining new structures' to the organisation following Caborn's shake-up of Sport England for a 'new chapter' with a greater regional focus. Casey tendered his resignation in a meeting with Caborn and Sport England chair, Trevor Brooking, yesterday. Brooking praised Casey for his dedication: I am very sorry to see Derek go. It is very much in the manner of the man to put the Council before his own interests.
