2012 flag raised at Crystal Palace
Local children from the London Borough of Bromley joined potential future Olympians at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Sunday 24 August to see the London Olympic Handover Flag raised.
The ceremony marked the climax of an afternoon of athletics events where GB International athletes were on hand to help coach youngsters in track and field events including sprint training and shot put. Medals were given out on the day for the fastest three males and fastest females over 30m.
There was also a display of the original 1948 Olympic Torch which was carried down from the site of the original Crystal Palace and into the Stadium for the children to experience first hand.
Lucy Taylor, general manager of Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, said: "Greenwich Leisure was delighted to be asked by the London Borough of Bromley to host the Olympic Flag Handover Ceremony. This is a fantastic way to celebrate London becoming the Host City."
Peter Bundey, director of GLL said: "After the most successful Olympic performance by GB for 100 years, the baton has been handed to London for 2012 as the formal Host City.
"The raising of the Olympic Handover Flag symbolises this and will be a reminder that we must continue to build upon the fantastic inspiration from GB athletes and all contribute to the future success of London 2012.
"Through our partnership with the London Development Agency at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, we believe that the Handover Flag will both inspire talented athletes using this centre and drive local community enthusiasm for the games."
