2012 funding (…continued)
This has to be a running story for ISPAL because of its tough impact on leisure, culture and sport funding, over the next few years, at the essential “grass roots” level.
Because the massive, escalating commitment to 2012 is already affecting our members working in leisure centres, sports programmes, sports governing bodies and private sector companies - not to mention the arts programmes, parks, and the culture sector. And the signs are it’s going to get worse.
The devil’s in the detail - so, let’s look at the new Olympic budget announced recently by Secretary of State Tessa Jowell MP:
For the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)
• £3.1bn for the core facilities: eg the Olympic stadium • £1.76 bn for infrastructure and regeneration of the lower Lea Valley
• £500m contingency
For Games preparation • £390m on sport: eg funding for UK Sport to prepare athletes for Bejing and 2012)
• £600m security • £840m tax
• £2.2bn for contingency
And the source of the funding? Already, there’s £425m from the Big Lottery Fund and £250m from other “grass roots” distributors which includes Sport England.
In fact, the whole bill will affect funding for schemes and developments across our industry, including the arts, heritage, parks and horticulture. Already, arts campaigners are up in arms, with press statements in London this week.
And legacy? We all remember the declarations made by the 2012 team and the Government in Singapore and afterwards.
The 2012 Games were dedicated to getting more people into active sport & recreation. That was to be the real “legacy” of Britain hosting the Olympic Games. If any of that promise is to be maintained - and if other vital funding for the culture sector is not to be hit cruelly - we must all stay vigilant, critical and active.
