350 Islington teens celebrate Saturday Night Project's return
Over 350 young people celebrated the return of the highly successful Saturday Night Project on 29 September, Islington's monthly youth engagement event at the Sobell Leisure Centre.
As a 'welcome back' special offer, youngsters who brought their Saturday Night Project izz leisure cards along on the night benefitted from free entry.
Funded by Islington Giving and managed by Aquaterra Leisure, the events give 13 – 19 year olds the chance to take part in a wide range of popular activities, sports and coached sessions including Body Zorbing, the Islington Dance Academy, football, basketball, trampolining and ice skating plus music, competitions and prizes .
Highlights of this month's event included the ever popular smoothie bike and attendance by the Community Diner and the Catch 22 youth engagement team.
Regular events took a short break this summer whilst the sports hall served as a practice venue for Olympic volleyball athletes, including Team GB and 11 other national teams. The sports hall had been given a £250,000 revamp using Olympic funding, providing a new sprung wooden floor and international-standard lighting.
Damien Swan, Manager at Sobell Leisure Centre, said: "It was great to see so many young people enjoying themselves and taking part in activities in a fun and safe environment."
Aquaterra Leisure took over the management of the Saturday Night Project in January 2012 and has recorded record breaking attendance figures to date.
The project has strong links with a network of youth projects and supporters in the borough of Islington, all helping to make a positive impact in the local community. Organisations and supporters include City and islington College, Macquarie Bank, Islington Stop Smoking, More Life, The Brook, Access to Sports, Platform, Catch 22 and the Community Diner.
