A home for black theatre
The Talawa Theatre Company has launched an appeal to build a home for black theatre in London.
The company has already won £3.6m of funding from the Arts Council Lottery and the Millennium Commission for a performance space on the site of the Westminster Theatre, which is currently under demolition. Talawa now needs to raise a further £1.8m in matching funds for the development, which will include a 270-seat auditorium rooms for rehearsal and education, a café and an archive.
The patrons aim is to create an international centre dedicated to the development of black theatre, which will not serve the Talawa Theatre Company alone. Companies working in other parts of London, the UK and abroad will be invited to stage productions at the theatre where Talawa expects to have four productions a year. Details: +44 (0)20 7251 6644
