Advertisers protest at Olympics Bill
Advertisers’ representatives are to lobby the government in protest over proposed legislation to prevent misuse of the Olympic brand ahead of the 2012 Games in London.
The Olympics Bill, which was drawn up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) last month, has established a legal framework for hosting the Games which includes strict restrictions over the use of Olympics-related terms for advertising purposes.
The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) said that the legislation will prevent other companies from benefiting in any way.
The IPA’s legal director, Marina Palomba, said the bill was “unreasonable” adding: “London businesses in particular will be paying for these Games, but will have to pretend they are not happening.”
