Arts and Business defends corporate Britain's support
Arts & Business, the arts consultancy firm, has hit back at recent comments from the outgoing chief of the Southbank Centre criticising the City's failure to support the arts.
Michael Lynch, who is returning to his native Australia, said last Friday (24 April) that corporate Britain was a "bunch of bastards" that had "let the side down" by not supporting the arts when the economy was healthy.
However, Colin Tweedy, chief executive of Arts & Business, said: "We like and admire Michael Lynch and believe he has been a force for good at the Southbank. This attack is misplaced though and he risks damaging future cultural investment.
"Arts & Business research proves that London has seen a 22 per cent increase in private investment in culture to £477.5m. The private sector has coughed up a lot as individuals and as businesses.
"Corporate Britain is not letting the side down. Of course businesses could do more, but let's thank them for what they are doing. Kicking them is not the answer."
