Ashes fever gripped British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic as the two airline rivals offered cricket-themed promotions for flights to Australia.

BA offered seats to Sydney and Melbourne for the price equivalent to Australia’s first innings tally (367) in the Ashes decider at the Oval in London.

The number of tickets made available was then decided by England’s first innings total in the match (373).

Virgin followed shortly by unveiling its own ‘Freddie’ fares to Australia, celebrating English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

The offer was based on the total number of runs scored by Flintoff in the series (404), which determined the price and the number of tickets available.
