BAA traffic falls despite Edinburgh growth
Airport operator BAA has reported a 2.6 per cent decrease in passenger traffic during September 2009, despite a sixth successive month of growth at Edinburgh Airport.
Compared with the same period last year, Edinburgh Airport handled 3.8 per cent more passengers, which has been attributed to the introduction of new low-cost European services. Meanwhile, passenger numbers at both Gatwick and Heathrow Airport have remained stable during September, with Gatwick recording its best performance since May 2008. Stansted traffic declined by 11.6 per cent.
BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said: "Conditions remain challenging for the industry. Heathrow continues to perform well in its market, delivering strong long-haul performance on routes to India and the Middle East. "At Gatwick there are encouraging signs of growth, particularly in the European scheduled business and the overall numbers around the group appear to be improving."
