BHA offers guidance to hotels in preparation for DDA
The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has issued advice to hoteliers on how to comply with Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), which comes into effect on 1 October 2004.
Developed in conjunction with the Diverse Solutions team at the Disability Partnership, the guidance includes six steps designed to ensure hotel guests’ needs are noted and acted upon when offering and accepting bookings.
The six steps include ensuring hotel staff and agents are familiar with the accessible features of the property; asking to be advised of access needs when taking bookings; checking with the guest that their requirements have been correctly noted; being honest about facilities and offering alternatives if full access is not available; ensuring queries about facilities for disabled guests are answered correctly, not ‘off the cuff’; and asking if there are any other ways the guest can be helped when they arrive.
“The six steps summarise the way a hotel booking should be handled to avoid any misunderstandings,” said Bob Cotton, chief executive of the BHA. “We suggest that appropriate wording appears on all printed material.”
The guidance package the BHA has prepared also includes questions that must be answered, a model policy statement, a legal synopsis of the act and some legal case studies. Details: www.bha.org.uk
