BIIAB launches responsible alcohol retailing award
The British Institute of Innkeeping’s (BII) awarding body (BIIAB) has launched a BIIAB Scottish Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (SARAR) as part of its commitment to responsible alcohol sales in Scotland.
The qualification – provided through approved centres – offers information and explanations on how alcohol retailers can sell alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises.
The award is available in two versions. The first focuses on training staff involved in the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises, whereas the second version deals with consumption off the premises.
An examination – a paper or telephone assessment containing two compulsory questions – has been designed to ensure trainees fully understand the legislation concerning under age sales and serving drunk people.
Cathie Smith, director of BIIAB, said: “The award enables the industry to deal with pressures such as test purchasing and responsible retailing of alcoholic liquor. This BIIAB qualification offers a flexible approach to learning, both in terms of the length of the course and the way it is delivered.
“The qualification has been extensively piloted and I am confident that it is the most appropriate qualification of its type for the Scottish licensed retail sector.”
The qualification covers the nature of alcohol, the common measurements of alcohol content and the effect it has on the human body. It also considers the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976 in relation to alcohol retailers and servers, the licensing law in relation to children and the social responsibilities of its sale.
It also promotes strategies to prevent or eliminate alcohol-related conflict and the importance of personal safety.
BII is the professional body for the licensed retail sector and has more than 17,500 members and 50 patron and corporate members. In 2005, BIIAB processed 190,350 qualifications to promote high standards of professionalism throughout the licensed retail sector. Details: www.bii.org or www.biiab.org
