Banbridge ice scheme secures council backing
A private sector scheme to develop a new full-sized ice rink on the outskirts of Banbridge, Northern Ireland, have been backed by the local authority.
Plans put forward by Newry-based Murdock Group and Innovative Leisure Systems of Dundalk for the Bridgewater Park project have been handed the support of Banbridge District Council (BDC). The facility will be designed to meet International Hockey League requirements and will boast a normal capacity of 300 seated and 700 standing, which can be increased to 1,400.
Banbridge Ice Dome, which is scheduled to open in November if plans are approved, will comprise a semi-permanent building to test demand before the structure is made more permanent. BDC leisure and development committee chair Stephen Herron said: "We hope this new development will be in the vanguard of the next wave of regeneration bringing meaningful investment and continued growth to the area."
Murdock Group development director Brian Henning added: "We know how much the council and the community want to see further development at Bridgewater Park and this is something new and innovative."
