Banstead swimming pool plans dropped
Reigate & Banstead Council has had to scrap its plans for a new swimming pool at a new leisure centre being built in Banstead, Surrey.
The news comes after the council carried out a review of its services and investment plans in light of the economic climate and reduced government funding.
The £4.3m facility is currently being built to replace the existing Banstead leisure centre by 2014, albeit now minus the pool.
Joan Spiers, council leader, said: "The continued economic uncertainty along with reducing government funding will have a major impact on our budget for the significant future. We cannot deliver everything we would like to and have had to make some difficult decisions about what we can do with the limited resources we have.
"Unfortunately this means that we can no longer afford a pool at the new Banstead Leisure Centre. The ongoing running costs of a 'dry' facility are substantially less thus reducing the impact on council tax.
"By making a decision now the council intends this project to kick-start other investment in Preston."
