Beacon reveals energy saving research
More than half of hospitality businesses have undertaken energy saving measures in the last year, and over two thirds regularly recycle waste.
According to a report by purchase service provider Beacon, 52 per cent of UK-based hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs and other leisure operators surveyed have taken steps to reduce their energy consumption in the last 12 months.
The hotel sector’s figure (54 per cent) is higher than the industry average (40 per cent). Only 23 per cent of bars, restaurants and pubs have made changes to reduce wastage.
In addition, Scottish businesses have made the most significant steps, with 81 per cent of waste being recycled compared with just 59 per cent in both England and Wales.
However, almost two thirds believe that local authorities are not giving sufficient support and information on best environmental practices for businesses. Companies in England and Wales revealed the least support, with 65 per cent believing they have been given inadequate information compared with 42 per cent in Scotland.
Beacon’s utilities & services buyer, Ben Waters, said: “It is clear that the majority of businesses in the hospitality industry are making efforts to change the way they operate for the good of the environment and to improve efficiency and thereby reduce costs for their business.
“There appears to be a general feeling that more advice and support should be available and businesses are not sure where to go to find this.” Details: www.beaconpurchasing.co.uk
