Better Public Building Award shortlist announced
A list of the 14 finalists in the 3rd annual Better Public Building Award has been announced and features four names from the leisure and tourism industries.
Included are the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth – opened earlier this year – and Manchester’s Imperial War Museum North.
Also named are the City of Manchester Stadium – built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and shortly to become home to Manchester City football club – and Laban, a contemporary dance studio in south east London.
The four will be in competition with entries as diverse as a library, a flood alleviation scheme, a motorway junction improvement project and HM Treasury.
The award scheme is sponsored jointly by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and is part of the British Construction Industry Awards.
The winner of the 2003 award will be announced on 22 October. Previous winners include Bristol’s City Learning Centre in 2002 and the Tate Modern art gallery – a former south London power station – in 2001. Details: www.betterpublicbuildings.gov.uk
