Blackpool 'café culture' plans progress
Blackpool Council has announced that new conditions for cafés and restaurants are set to come into force from 1 April as part of efforts to create a 'café culture'.
Among the new conditions attached to licences, which are renewed yearly at the start of April, is the siting of outdoor seating areas within approved barriers that can be removed when a premises is closed. Furniture must also be of a "high quality design and construction" as part of the new measures, while 75 per cent of outdoor space should be designated for non-smokers.
Maxine Callow, cabinet member for tourism and regeneration for the council, said: "Eating and enjoying a drink outdoors is becoming increasingly popular and therefore more local restaurant and café owners are opting to utilise their outdoor space. "These outdoor spaces should enhance the local area and be pleasant places to sit therefore it is important that they are not overtaken by those who can no longer smoke indoors."
